QC Liberator - Carl Cleve

5th Infantry Division patch

Carl R. Cleve, Davenport, Iowa

Mr. Cleve was with the 5th Infantry Division, 2nd Infantry Regiment. He assisted with the liberation of an allied Prisoner of War camp first, which was filled with American, Russian, British and other allied soldiers. Within 36 hours of liberating this camp he found himself at the gates of a concentration camp near Volary, Czechoslovakia. He was a company commander who had been in Europe 3 1/2 years when his troops came upon the camp. He saw men and women dying from starvation. He laments that the care and feeding they gave them couldn't keep most of them alive. Mr. Cleve, your compassionate efforts will always be remembered.
