Richard S. Corbin, Davenport, Iowa
Mr. Corbin was with the 8th Signal Company, the 8th Infantry Division. He was a 21-year-old officer, the youngest in his unit, when his division liberated Wöbbelin Concentration Camp in Germany. Beyond the guard towers and barbed wire fences he came face to face with the starving inmates and the reality of what had happened to thousands of them within this slave labor camp. He helped his men establish telephone communications with Division Headquarters, and then was directed to tour all the buildings so he could relate what he had seen to the commanding General. What he saw, the living and the dead, has been indelibly stamped on his memory. Mr. Corbin, your compassionate efforts will always be remembered.
