Henry Hartz, Davenport, Iowa
Mr. Hartz was with the 3rd Army, 87th Division, 346th Infantry Division. He started in combat at Reims, France, and ended up in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. In the path, along the way, he and his fellow soldiers liberated Buchenwald. Even though he had heard about events surrounding the concentration camps, he couldn't believe what he saw. Bodies, tangled corpses, and ovens, all were overwhelming and hard to believe. "It gave me great pleasure," he says, " to relieve some of the suffering in whatever way I could." Mr. Hartz, you compassionate efforts will always be remembered.
