QC Liberator - Wayne Jens

Patch 3rd Infantry Division

Wayne Jens, Davenport, Iowa

Mr. Jens was with the 3rd Infantry Division which invaded Southern France during the final days of the war and proceeded up the Rhine River Valley. He was responsible for getting supplies to the Army as it advanced. While quartered at Secondheim, about halfway between Mannheim and Heidelberg, he picked up a medical officer and his equipment at an airport and drove him to a slave labor camp near Schwetzengen. There he was confronted for the first time with the double wire fencing and the guardhouses, made to keep people in, not to keep people out. The inmates where nothing more than skin and bone, but in spite of all they had been through, he remembers that some wanted to help him unload his jeep when he arrived. Mr. Jens, your compassionate efforts will always be remembered.
