QC Liberator - Archie Weindruch

patch 101st airborne division

Archie Weindruch, Bettendorf, Iowa

Mr. Weindruch was a staff sergeant with the 101st Airborne, 506th Parachute Regiment, whose destination was Berchtesgaden, Hitler's retreat. In their advance, he and his men came upon a labor camp near Austria. The Germans took off quickly in retreat. As he went through the barracks, he remembers the horrible sights and sounds, but most of all he remembers the smell. In one building in particular, he realized they were doing medical experiments on the inmates. One young Jewish girl they were experimenting on stands out in his mind; she was in very bad shape. Words fail him in describing all that he saw and experienced. Mr. Weindruch, your compassionate efforts will always be remembered.
